Most desert settings hand you a stretch of sand to cross and a tally of waterskins to watch. Arkh-Perain: Dust and Coin hands you a desert that notices you crossed it, remembers what you disturbed, and decides how it wants to answer.
Built by independent French studio The Whispering Keep, Arkh-Perain is a 5.5e-compatible campaign setting grown from more than a decade of real play at the table. It launches on Kickstarter on November 10, and the free Primer is available to download right now.

What Is Arkh-Perain: Dust and Coin?
Arkh-Perain is a full campaign setting for players and Game Masters, built around one idea: the world should shape play, not just sit behind it as scenery. At its center is the Living Desert, a reactive environment that responds to where the party goes, what they touch, and what they leave behind.
Around that core sits everything a group needs to run it: reactive factions with their own agendas, new character options, collaborative spells and magic items, and practical GM tools like ready-to-use NPCs, adventure hooks, campaign frames, and ready-to-run starters. Arkh-Perain can be harsh, but it is not a hopeless survival grind. It is built for exploration, political tension, discovery, and choices that carry weight.
And the sand is only the doorway. Stories can carry the party through the mountain valleys of Cteseiron, the ports of Isfarea, the savannas and jungles of the Unbroken Wilds, or into the mage-ruled Scholarship of Nesugeia. Each region stands on its own as a place to adventure.
What Makes It Different
The Living Desert
Not a resource-management puzzle. A living biosphere that tracks the party’s Attention and shifts the weather, the route, and what they meet in response to their choices.
Factions With Agendas
The Pers guilds hold public duties and private plans. Alliances move with contracts and opportunity. Even the main antagonist works from the shadows rather than marching on the gates.

Collaborative Magic
Spells and magic items designed so players combine abilities and make decisions together, instead of handing one character another solo power.
Ready to Run
Depth without heavy prep. Ready-to-use NPCs, hooks, campaign frames, and starter adventures let a GM sit down and play, from a single expedition to a years-long campaign.
Who This Is For
- Tables that love exploration, political intrigue, discovery, and decisions that actually change the world around them.
- GMs who want a deep, reactive setting without a heavy prep load every session.
- Groups looking for something that scales from a one-shot expedition to a long-running campaign.
- Players on 5.5e, and anyone who wants a setting that adapts cleanly to other rulesets too.

Interview: The Whispering Keep
We asked the team behind Arkh-Perain about where it came from and what they hope players take away from it.
Where did the idea come from?
Arkh-Perain did not begin as a Kickstarter project. It grew out of a campaign world we played and developed over roughly a decade. Locations that started as names on a map became cities, factions developed their own agendas, NPCs gained histories, and the Desert became more than the space between adventures. Many of the major NPCs in the book grew out of characters who were actually played in those campaigns. Once that long-running game concluded, we realized we had something worth turning into a setting other groups could actually use.
What sets it apart from other 5e settings?
The first difference is the Living Desert. We did not want it to be a resource-management exercise about how many waterskins you have left. It is treated like a living biosphere. How the characters travel through it, what they disturb, and how they interact with it can attract its attention and change what happens around them.
The second is the factions. We wanted them to behave like believable organizations with their own agendas, rather than groups that exist only for the players to poke at. The Pers guilds have public responsibilities and private plans, alliances shift with contracts and opportunity, and neighboring powers push their influence through trade, diplomacy, magic, and politics. Even the main antagonist does not simply march an army to the city gates. It works from the shadows, destabilizing the balance before it reveals itself. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of things you can hit.
We are also proud of the collaborative design in some of the spells and magic items. They give players reasons to combine abilities and decide together, rather than just handing one person another power.
A moment at the table you are most excited for players to hit?
It is not a scripted encounter or a boss fight. It is the moment the group starts to realize the Desert is responding to them. They set out toward a ruin and treat the trip like any other campaign. Then their decisions start moving the Desert’s Attention. The weather turns, the route gets less predictable, something appears where they did not expect it. At some point they stop asking “what did the GM roll?” and start asking “what did we do to make the Desert react like this?” In playtesting, that still works even after players understand there is a system behind it. That is when the environment stops feeling like a table of encounters and starts feeling like another force at the table. One small spoiler: we plan to explore other Living biospheres in the future.
“The Desert noticed us.” If players remember one thing, that is the feeling the setting is built to create.
About The Whispering Keep
The Whispering Keep is a new independent TTRPG creator based in France, building settings and tools where the world actually responds to what players do. No static backdrops, no illusion of choice.
Arkh-Perain: Dust and Coin is their debut release: a 5.5e-compatible desert setting born from more than a decade of campaign play, built around the Living Desert, collaborative play, practical GM tools, and player options rooted directly in the world. The goal is material that feels alive, is easy to bring to the table, and can support years of play rather than a single story arc.

What’s on the Kickstarter
The campaign offers digital and print editions of Arkh-Perain: Dust and Coin, with the manuscript already substantially complete rather than sitting at the concept stage. It is a full sourcebook for both players and Game Masters, combining setting material, character options, adventures, and practical tools for running the campaign.
Early backers also receive Welcome to Arkh-Perain, a Level 1 to 3 introductory adventure designed as an easy first step into the setting, with extra character and game material included. It splits into two parts, and the first works as a kind of Session 0.5, using pre-generated characters to give players a quick taste of Arkh-Perain before their own campaign begins. If the campaign passes its funding goal, stretch goals will expand the setting with additional maps and two further adventures.
The team publishes weekly updates on the Kickstarter page as they move toward launch, and the free Arkh-Perain Primer is available now for an early look at the setting.
